2019 China Brand Forum held in Beijing

The 2019 China Brand Forum, organized by People’s Daily, was held in Beijing on Wednesday.

Wang Dongming, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) delivered a speech at the forum.

During his speech, Wang said Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposal to encourage the transition from “made in China” to “created in China”, from “China speed” to “China quality”, and from “Chinese products” to “Chinese brands” profoundly demonstrated the importance of technological innovation and brand construction.

He stressed that China needs to focus on global competition in order to improve product quality and enhance branding, and value the dual-strategy of “bringing in” and “going global”.

Li Baoshan, president of People’s Daily, remarked that China’s confidence to construct the country into a branding power is stronger than ever. In recent years, China has made great strides in brand building, but has not nurtured enough world-renowned brands, which does not match China’s title as the world’s second largest economy and largest manufacturer.

Only 38 Chinese brands were ranked in the 2018 edition of the World's 500 Most Influential Brands, released by the brand consulting and research firm World Brand Lab. There was a big gap between China and major western economies in the number of listed brands, as well as the value and quality of these brands.

According to the development index of Chinese brands issued by the forum, tech firm Huawei, e-commerce giant Alibaba, automaker SAIC Motor, internet conglomerate Tencent, and communication carrier China Mobile were listed among the top 100.
